Annual Physical Exams Q & A

Why are annual physicals important?

Just as a car needs regular maintenance with a reliable mechanic who knows its history, so, too, do people. Annual checkups provide valuable baseline information and medical history that will serve to track the health and welfare of patients as they move from each of stage of life to the next.

The preventive screening and monitoring an annual physical provides is invaluable in detecting issues before they become problems. All too often, chronic conditions go undiagnosed until it’s too late, when a simple treatment or lifestyle adjustment could have changed the course of the condition. The doctors at Montes Medical Group believe that it’s important to establish lifelong relationships with each of their patients to ensure consistent care and to help catch and treat health issues before they become serious.

What is monitored during an annual physical?

This yearly checkup with your doctor is the most effective method for maintaining up-to-date information about your health. To that end, the following are usually checked:

  • Blood pressure
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Heart rate
  • Respiratory rate
  • Temperature
  • Reflexes

In addition, the doctor may ask for a urine sample or order blood test, and will likely examine the following areas with a stethoscope or other specialized equipment:

  • Heart
  • Lungs
  • Abdomen
  • Head and neck -- including the eyes, ears, and throat
  • Neurological points

Ultimately, the doctor will examine the whole person, from top to bottom. In fact, general appearance, especially among patients a doctor sees frequently, can divulge a wealth of information to the trained eye.

Perhaps the most important part of the physical exam is the discussion about concerns, changes in the body, family history and more, between the doctor and the patient, allowing the doctor to make recommendations, prescribe preventive medicine, and note areas to watch during future visits.
