Asthma

Asthma is a common chronic condition over the course of which bronchial tubes in the lungs become inflamed. This can cause your airways to tighten and/or fill with thick mucous, making it hard for air to pass through. If left untreated, severe asthma can lead to serious health risks and even death. At Montes Medical Group, we strive to offer our patients the care they need, when they need it. This condition is entirely manageable and can be properly addressed with help from an experienced healthcare provider. If you have bronchial asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory issues, we urge you to make an appointment at one of our Los Angeles offices today.

What Is Asthma?

Allergies are one of the most common triggers of asthma, whether you have an allergy to a type of food, pollen, or something else in the environment, an allergic reaction can strike suddenly and cause serious risk. Four out of five people with asthma are triggered by some kind of environmental allergy. Triggers of this condition vary from person to person. You may have one of these triggers, two, three, or a larger combination of triggers. Common triggers include pollen, smoke, certain food like peanuts, and certain medications.

What Are the Symptoms?

The most notable symptom of asthma is difficulty breathing. During an episode, it is common to experience wheezing, rales (bubbling sounds during inhalation), shortness of breath, tightness of the chest, and coughing. Symptoms can range in severity from person to person. In some cases, you may need only a few minutes to catch your breath, in others,  you may find it almost impossible to catch a breath and will need medical intervention.

How Do We Address Asthma?

Asthma can be managed with proper monitoring and medication. When you visit one of our Los Angeles offices, our physicians will provide you with a thorough evaluation to understand the extent of your symptoms. We offer the latest diagnostic technology, but often a lung function test such as Spirometry may be sufficient to see how your breathing changes before and after medication. During your visit, we may also perform allergy testing to see if your asthma is caused by an allergic reaction. Through ongoing support and medication, you can get this illness under control.
